The success of the fruit, flower, and vegetable fair was reflected in awareness and donations; in the end, 1.7 tons of fresh produce were donated to the NGO Food Bank.
The Brazil Conference & Expo concluded its 8th edition in exceptional fashion. With a record attendance of 4,300 people, an increase of 72% over the previous year, the fair’s organization agreed with the 150 participating brands that the food on display during the two days of the event would be voluntarily donated to those in need. The NGO Banco de Alimentos was responsible for managing and delivering a total of 1.7 tons of fresh produce, which was distributed to 14 organizations in São Paulo.
Founded in 1998, the NGO Banco de Alimentos is a civil association that collects food that has lost its shelf value but is still fit for consumption and distributes it where it is most needed. This donation enables the nutritional supplementation of meals served to thousands of children, youth, adults, and the elderly in the city of São Paulo every day. In its 26 years of existence, the Food Bank has already delivered 20,000 tons of food, benefiting 38,000 people.
The event, which took place on August 7 and 8 in São Paulo, presented the sector’s challenges and opportunities and provided an ideal environment for networking and updates on the Fruit, Flower, Vegetable, and Greens (FFLV) industry. The opportunity provided by the largest FFLV trade fair in Latin America was enjoyed by visitors from 24 Brazilian states, as well as 16 countries, including Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Spain, France, Canada, Belgium, Italy, and the United States.
Valeska Oliveira, IFPA Country Manager and Head of Products at Francal, celebrated the success of the event and highlighted the importance of actions like this for the FFLV industry. “We’re very happy with the outcome of the event, from start to finish. Being able to hold an event of this magnitude, with national and international participants and exhibitors, gives us the certainty that we are on the right track. We closed on a high note, fulfilling our commitment to the entire ESG agenda and focusing on the well-being of people,” she said.
The fair, held by the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) and organized by Francal, brought together a conference and an exhibition in the same place, with the aim of emphasizing the importance of adding value to fresh produce at every link in the FFLV chain. “The Brazil Conference & Expo already has a date set for 2025. On August 6th and 7th next year, we hope to further increase the connection between the brands in the sector, focusing on the national and international markets,” says Valeska.
Authorities attended the event. Members of the public authorities were present and highlighted their focus and support related to the FFLV industry. For state deputy Mário Maurici (PT-SP) and former president of Ceagesp, the Brazil Conference & Expo plays an important role in the development of the segment. “The biggest challenge here is to cope with growth and the ever-increasing demands made by the consumer. We have to be able to offer a product that is always of the highest quality and traceable, in order to develop this market more and more,” he said.
The executive secretary of the São Paulo Department of Agriculture and Supply, Edson Fernandes, was also present and emphasized the value of fruit growing in the country, which leverages the state of São Paulo into a significant increase in the production chain and the local economy. “I congratulate the exhibitors on their determination and excellent work they are doing in our region and in Brazilian fruit growing. May the sector become even stronger and more representative for producers, distributors, and the entire logistics chain,” said Fernandes.
Also present were Valdir Colatto, Secretary of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Rural Development of Santa Catarina; Jamil Yatim, CEO of CEAGESP; Nidovando Pinheiro, President of ACESU; Carlos Correa, Superintendent of Apas; as well as various other authorities.
